Our Favorite Divination Tools

Our Favorite Divination Tools

As we near Samhain, you may be called to practice more divination. While you don’t need any fancy tools to divine information from the spirit world, it can help to have one or two trusted tools to channel your magick and messages. Below are a few of our favorites here at Inked Goddess Creations.

Before we dive in, be sure to cleanse your space and your tools before use. Working in the realm of divination requires you to safeguard against any malicious forces that might be lurking nearby. Blessing your tools with moon water or a ritual oil is always a good idea. You can also speak an intention aloud that only good spirits with your best, healthiest interests may communicate with you. Both of these measures will help prevent unintended consequences.

Okay, now let’s get started…

Runes

One of my favorite new divination tools is my set of Elder Futhark Runes. This Northern European tool contains 24 letters in the runic alphabet. Each rune represents a word that was important to the lives of early European and Nordic cultures. For instance, “fehu” means “cattle,” and one can infer information from this meaning. When cast together, the runes can help guide your intuition to find out what needs to happen next or what might be on the horizon.

Oracle Cards or Tarot Cards

Oracle cards offer a fun way to tune into your intuition without having to memorize card meanings. However, even if you turn to the tarot guidebook for interpretations, you can glean some surprisingly accurate information from both oracle and tarot cards. *By the way, never feel weird or insufficient if you rely on the enclosed booklets in your card decks. It doesn’t mean your divination practice isn’t good enough.

Despite the rumors, you don’t have to be gifted your first deck of tarot cards. Instead, I recommend tuning into your intuition to find out if a card deck is for you. Sometimes you’ll find one that’s really fun and a novelty item that you want to add to your collection but doesn’t bring you any information when you use them. That’s ok! Find the card deck that works for YOU.

Pendulums

Pendulums are easy divination tools, even for a beginner. If you don’t have a pendulum, you can use a necklace with a moderately heavy pendant on it. Ask the pendulum to show you “Yes” and “No” and then begin asking questions that can be answered with a yes or no answer. Anything else can be interpreted as “unknown” or “maybe.”

Spirit Boards

If you want to learn more about spirit boards/Ouija board, be sure to tune into her recent podcast episode on Busy, Gritty, Inked, and Witchy: “Spirit Boards: Spirit Communication and Portal to Hell?” There are many myths about spirit boards. The Ouija board has been around since the 1800s, but the Ancient Greeks and Romans, and Native Americans, have had a similar tool to our modern spirit boards. Many people are familiar with these tools, and they can be used to divine messages from the spirit world through the use of a planchette on a board with the alphabet on it.

Scrying Mirror or Stone

Scrying must be done when you’re in a positive state of mind and can remain alert. Use a scrying mirror, stone, or even crystal ball to practice this art of divination. Place a candle in front of your scrying object and allow your eyes to relax, and you may begin to see shapes and forms between you and the object. The key is to remain relaxed. Many scrying practitioners will tell you that if you try to focus on the images too hard, they’ll disappear.

A Quick Note About Safety

With all of these divination methods, it’s important to open and close your session out as you would during a spell-casting session or a ritual. Thank the spirits who have helped you during your practice and make it clear that you have closed off communication for now.

And remember: you’re the most important tool in ANY magickal practice because YOU are the magick!
